About Writers in Oxford

Writers in Oxford was set up by local members of the Society of Authors in 1992 and is run by writers for one another. We welcome applications from writers living and working in the Oxford area who have had a full-length work published, broadcast or performed commercially (not at the author’s expense) or who have an established reputation in another medium, for example journalism.

Our main purpose is social, and our style informal and friendly. We aim to provide opportunities for writers to meet one another, to promote discussion, and to be a forum for the exchange of ideas and information.
Our programme of regular events includes:

  • topical suppers with guest speakers including well-known literary figures
  • informal ‘at home’ drinks evenings
  • visits of literary and cultural interest
  • Christmas and Summer parties
  • an annual literary quiz

Writers in Oxford publishes a newsletter, The Oxford Writer, with details of activities, news of members' publications, and articles on topics of interest.

Members have the option to be listed in our Writers in Oxford Directory which is primarily to help us get in touch with one another.

Although we hope to make the lives of Oxford authors more congenial and convivial, we cannot undertake to offer advice on contracts or other professional matters. We therefore always recommend that our members should also join the organisation out of which we originally grew - the Society of Authors.
